Common Crossword Clue Types

Understanding the different types of crossword clues will help you solve puzzles faster and with greater confidence.

Fill-in-the-Blank

Example: "The Lord is my ___" (Psalm 23:1)SHEPHERD. These are often the easiest clues and a good starting point.

Direct Definition

Example: "First book of the Bible"GENESIS. The clue is a straightforward definition of the answer.

Scripture Reference

Example: "Fruit of the Spirit (Gal. 5:22)"LOVE, JOY, PEACE, etc. These clues point to a specific passage. Look it up!

Abbreviation

Example: "Old Testament book (abbr.)"GEN, EXO, etc. The clue will include "abbr." or another abbreviation indicator.

Wordplay (Marked with ?)

Example: "Heavenly body of water?"SEA OF GALILEE. The question mark signals the clue involves a pun or creative interpretation.
