Accessibility Statement

Heavenly Crossword is intended to be usable with a keyboard, screen magnification, browser zoom, and common assistive technologies. This statement documents features that are present in the current interface and limitations that still need attention. It is not a claim that an independent WCAG conformance audit has been completed.

Site Navigation and Reading

• A skip link moves keyboard focus to the main page content.
• Pages use a main landmark, headings, lists, links, and labeled controls.
• Keyboard focus is shown with visible outlines on supported interactive elements.
• Light, dark, high-contrast, and system theme choices are available in the header.
• Reduced-motion styles respond to the operating system's prefers-reduced-motion setting.
• Layout and text can be enlarged with standard browser zoom.

Crossword Grid Controls

The interactive crossword is exposed as a grid with row and grid-cell roles. Each playable cell contains an input labeled with its row and column and, when applicable, its clue number. This structure gives assistive technology more context than an unlabeled matrix of single-letter fields, although announcements can still differ between screen reader and browser combinations.

Select a cell and type a letter to enter it. Use the arrow keys to move right, left, down, or up, and use Backspace to clear the current cell. Tab follows normal page navigation and leaves the grid for the next focusable control. Selecting the same cell again can switch between Across and Down when both directions apply.

Visual and Print Options

Use the theme control in the header to choose Light, Dark, High contrast, or System. The selected preference is stored in the browser. The System option follows the operating system's light or dark preference. A high-contrast theme can help some users, but it is not a substitute for individual browser, operating-system, or assistive technology settings.

Printer-friendly puzzle routes provide a blank grid with Across and Down clue lists for browser printing. Dedicated downloadable PDFs are not currently generated. The large-print collection uses larger presentation options where available, and browser zoom remains the most consistent way to enlarge other pages.

Using Browser and Device Settings

You can combine site controls with browser zoom, text scaling, forced colors, reading modes, or speech output. If a custom theme makes content harder to read, return the site theme to System and let the browser or operating system apply the preferred colors. Disabling animation at the operating-system level reduces nonessential transitions covered by the site's reduced-motion stylesheet.

Known Limitations

We are continuously improving accessibility. Currently known areas for improvement include:

• Grid announcements, editing, and focus behavior can vary across screen reader and browser combinations.
• Some dashboard and solver controls are complex client-side interactions.
• Dedicated PDF files are not available; printable routes use the browser print dialog.
• No independent WCAG 2.2 AA conformance report is currently published.

Scope of Testing

The codebase includes semantic roles, labels, keyboard handlers, theme styles, and reduced-motion rules that can be checked during development. The site does not claim a recurring test schedule with NVDA, JAWS, VoiceOver, or any particular audit tool unless a dated test report is published. Automated checks alone would not be enough to establish conformance because keyboard flow, screen reader output, zoom, and error recovery also require manual review.

Feedback & Assistance

If you encounter a barrier, include the page address, the action you were trying to complete, and the browser or assistive technology involved. That information makes the problem easier to reproduce.
